Leonard Braithwaite (1923-2012), Lawyer & Politician

Leonard Braithwaite was the first Black Canadian elected to a provincial legislature (Ontario). He initially worked as a lawyer in Toronto. His political career began in 1960 as a school board trustee in Etobicoke. In 1963, he was elected as Canada’s first Black parliamentarian. One of his achievements was to end school segregation in Ontario when the Segregated Schools Act was repealed in 1964. He also fought for gender equality and the rights of minorities as a Liberal MPP. He continued serving in municipal politics after losing his seat in the Ontario Legislature in 1975. Braithwaite was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1971 and received the Order of Canada in 1998.
